ICU Medical MedNet™ Integrates with the Vocera® Platform to Deliver IV Pump Alarms Directly to the Vocera Smartbadge and Smartphone App

Interoperability with this global leader in healthcare communication improves clinicians’ visibility, awareness and responsiveness to infusion pump alarms.

San Clemente, Calif. May 23, 2019 – ICU Medical, Inc., a worldwide leader in the development, manufacture and sale of innovative medical devices used in infusion therapy and critical care applications, has successfully integrated the ICU Medical MedNet safety software with the Vocera Platform. This integration enables hospitals to transmit and selectively filter alarms coming from ICU Medical’s line of IV smart infusion pumps — including the 2018 and 2019 Best in KLAS Plum 360as well as the LifeCare PCA (patient-controlled analgesia) — directly to clinicians’ hands-free Vocera Smartbadges and other mobile devices, reducing response time and providing another layer of clinical awareness.

Intelligent alarm management enhances efficiency and patient safety by helping to ensure priority messages are shared in meaningful ways, and patients are triaged quickly. Integrating ICU Medical MedNet with the Vocera Platform can help improve clinical awareness and reduce alarm fatigue.

This integration complements infusion analytics delivered by ICU Medical’s Clinical Consulting Services with detailed infusion status data on alerts and the ability to track trends with Vocera Analytics. In addition to leveraging more than a decade of ICU Medical’s interoperability capabilities, this solution utilizes Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) PCD-04 messages.

“Integrating with clinically focused partners is a key objective for ICU Medical, and we are very pleased to include Vocera as part of our growing list of connectivity partners. Intelligently routing contextual alerts and notifications that include patient and care team information to the right team member provides clinicians with a higher level of visibility into their patients’ infusion therapy,’’ said Matthew Hutchings, vice president of ICU Medical IV Informatics. “As our hospital partners strive to work more efficiently, having access to real-time and accurate data is crucial to their success.”

Within the hospital, clinicians can receive alarm information from the Plum 360 or LifeCare PCA infusion system on their hands-free Vocera Badge, Smartbadge, smartphone app or other mobile device. The alarm management capability of the Vocera Platform allows hospitals to escalate alerts among clinicians when a primary caregiver is not available and intelligently route alarms to reduce interruption fatigue.

“Every second counts when it comes to patient care, and ensuring that actionable notifications with event context are sent to the right person at the right time on his or her device of choice is critical,” said Rhonda Collins, chief nursing officer at Vocera. “We are pleased to partner with ICU Medical to provide real-time situational awareness with alerts and notification, helping reduce clinicians’ cognitive load so they can respond faster and collaborate better.”
