Level 1 Tympanic Temperature Sensors

Level 1 Tympanic Temperature Sensors

Monitoring of tympanic temperature is a well accepted clinical procedure for the detection of hypothermic or hyperthermic conditions. The Level 1 tympanic temperature sensor is designed for atraumatic placement in the proximity of the tympanic membrane. The sensor is placed in the center of a PVC foam cylinder. Prior to insertion, the foam cylinder is squeezed and rolled to obtain a small dimension which, once the sensor is in situ, expands to its original size, making physical contact with the walls of the ear canal. The foam expansion produces two effects: it secures the sensor in place, and it prevents communication of air from outside the ear canal. The expansion results in accurate temperature measurement even when the sensor is not touching the tympanic membrane.
