Neonates face an increased risk for both dehydration and fluid overload. Inadequate water intake can cause the baby to become dehydrated, while excessive water intake can cause heart and lung problems or intestinal damage.2 As a result, neonatal fluid and electrolyte requirements must be carefully calculated and monitored, including the volume of flush solution infused after blood draws or administration.
